Paul Vernon Chester ~ Guitarist & Composer
One of the UK’s and the world’s finest Gypsy Jazz guitarists, Paul’s playing and compositions are rapidly bringing him to the forefront of the jazz guitar scene. His playing, in the Django tradition, is warm open hearted and high octane! Regularly appearing on the same stage as many of the big names of the genre, Paul’s work has been broadcasted both in the UK and abroad. His compositions once heard are rarely forgotten. ‘Hauntingly beautiful’ and ‘infectious’ are both accurate descriptions that have been applied to Paul’s music, as proven in many performances that have earned him huge respect from audiences and artists alike. He is internationally respected and has shared stages with some of the world’s finest Gipsy Jazz musicians. Described by one hardened Gipsy Jazz fan as “scarily good” he not only plays with great technical finesse but, most importantly, with enormous charm and soul. He is supported by his cousin and long-time accompanist, the superb rhythm guitarist, Nick Mellor.

‘Duets for Django’ recorded at Live @ Concert Jazz In Thame on 14th March 2007 (Paul’s Birthday). This celebration may account for the Manouche Magic captured by Jake Kirkpatrick at this High-Quality Jazz Venue in Oxfordshire. This CD production gives great insight to Paul’s compositions, faultless technique and ability to improvise inventively on a chord structure. His tender treatment of slow tempo compositions. The attentive listening audience were so enraptured that their presence is only apparent in the enthusiastic applause at the end of each number. A must for Manoucheries – This is professional stuff – no Bootleg productions – all worthy of the highest standards. Paul and his cousin, rhythm guitarist Nick Mellor have been playing together since they were kids and their rapport is clearly apparent in their performances.

I saw Paul play back in the early 90’s when 2 of my friends Gordon Giltrap and Neil Cope opened a Music Shop in Knowle near Solihull. I realised then that Paul was a quite outstanding player of exceptional ability and a very nice man. At the time I thought he was the best lyrical guitarist I have ever seen and the list I have enjoyed includes Gordon, Brian May, Steve Howe, John Williams, Julian Bream, Segovia, Davy Graham, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne, Paco Penna, Manitas De Plata, to name a few and several 100 others over the last 50 years. I am writing simply to confirm my respect for his ability. The lyric runs he plays are utterly unforgettable. A veritable Master of the instrument. I also went to Lichfield Garrick Theatre to see him. Steffan Hughes MA MSc FCA FCCA
I remember performing at the opening of Neil Cope and Gordon Giltrap’s music shop in Knowle (no longer there). Gordon is a huge talent, unique guitarist and friend. I really respect his work. I played at the store for invited guest, Bert Weedon who was really gushing in his praise. – Paul V C

Just to let you know how delighted we are with the final product. As anticipated the recording quality is top notch and the packaging looks great. Love the colour scheme. Nick’s guitar works well for the tweaked volume. Notwithstanding the CD works really well. Many thanks for your hard work Jake and I feel we have a recording that truly reflects our performance ideals. It’s only when you hear the audience at the end of each track you realise this is a live recording! I feel the same tension that I felt at the gig! Very well done mate, you know your stuff. – Paul.

MP3 Samples – Here are some tempting morsels of the live performance @ Concert Jazz in Thame for your delectation.
Anouman – composed by Django – a reflective and beautiful slow tempo number
After Your Gone complete with mid flight apology for a chance string break as a result of Paul’s relentless attack on his guitar (hence unreleased as a track)

Many thanks for the CD, I am very impressed and is a great reminder of a great concert.- Martin
CD received. – I had expected it to be good, but I wasn’t prepared for it to be quite so delightful as it is. Paul Vernon Chester is probably fed up with people paying extravagant compliments on his playing, I would be obliged if you would pass on my congratulations on a truly masterful example of the Manouche guitar style – John McCarte
Yes, Paul is a brilliant player, recall his great show at L’espirit Manouche 2003!…Cheers, Phil
“Duets for Django” arrived this morning thanks very much. I am listening to it right now as I write this and enjoying it very much. Please pass on my best wishes to Paul and Nick, Would love to come down and have a tune with those guys, maybe someday if I can get a wee tour organised. Calum McKenzie – Bassist – Havana Swing
Acoustic Magazine Dec/Jan New Music – Duets for Django
This live recording features a dozen pieces in the ‘gypsy jazz’ style of Django Reinhardt and is an excellent showcase for one of the UK’s foremost exponents of the genre. With some sympathetic backing on rhythm, this is jazz and swing played on Manouche guitars with plenty of soul, skill and style. Check out the video clips on this website. – Graham Hazelwood
Audience Appreciation on the Night.
Great gig much enjoyed by all – Ade
Great gig last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Jill
We thought last night’s gig was absolutely fantastic! Well done you for getting such a magnificent duo to Thame….thank you so much. We were delighted a recording was being made of the event, and will eventually be for sale. We bought two CD’s last night but would love to have the ‘live’ one in our collection – Trude & Bernard
The concert last night was outstanding. Paul was such an unassuming guy but an incredible artist. We were all in awe of the performance and technical ability of the musician – you should be justly proud of presenting Jazz concerts of this quality; thank you. Tim bought me one of the CDs and I’ve just listened to it and want to find other CDs produced by Paul. – Sheila
Just to say we really enjoyed the gig, has he ever played with Christian Garrick? That would be awesome! Salutations, – Jules.
